Learning about data empowers you to solve complex problems, enhance critical thinking, and influence future advancements. Embrace data; become a catalyst for positive change and limitless opportunities.
This course will teach students about the fundamentals of data and equipping you with the knowledge and skills to be successful in a modern work place. This is a unit based course with a mixed of practical and examined assessment. There are 5 units in total.
- Fundamentals of data analytics: How is data gathered, structured, analysed & stored?
- Big data and machine learning: Learn about how big data is used by Governments, the Environment and Business. How is big data used by AI and machine learning.
- Spreadsheet data modelling: Learn about how data can be used to create models to be manipulated and create visual representations of data. A valuable skill for many workplaces.
- Data and the internet of everything: What is the IoE? Design your own example to be shared with stakeholders.
- Data and digital marketing: Create a digital marketing campaign for a specified purpose. You will use data to target your approach.
Entry Criteria
5 in GCSE English Language and 5 in a computer-related GCSE.

Subject Intent
This qualification is all about empowering students to think analytically with real-world data. From collecting and cleaning data, to visualising and interpreting it, learners gain hands-on experience using tools like spreadsheets, databases, and even exploring big data and machine learning. The course nurtures problem-solving, decision-making, and communication skills—key for both higher education and thriving in data-driven industries. It’s a dynamic blend of theory and practical work, with a supportive, inclusive approach to learning.
Course Overview
Certificate (H019, 150 GLH – equivalent to AS Level)
- Unit F200: Fundamentals of Data Analytics (75 GLH, external exam)
- Unit F202: Spreadsheet Data Modelling (75 GLH, NEA – externally set and moderated)
- Mandatory Units: F200 + F201: Big Data & Machine Learning (70 GLH, exam) + F202 (NEA)
- Optional NEA Units:
- F204: Data & the Internet of Everything
- F206: Data & Digital Marketing
Assessment
- F200 Exam: 1h 15m, 60 marks
- F201 Exam: 1h 30m, 60 marks
- NEA Components:
- F202 (mandatory), plus two optional NEAs for Extended Certificate
- Each NEA is approx. 15 GLH, assessed by OCR using published assignments and detailed grading criteria
Grading is compensation-based—meaning every mark counts, and students can still achieve Pass/Merit/Distinction even if one element isn’t perfect—rewarding well-rounded performance .
Homework & Independent Study
Expect a mix of:
- Practice exam questions and mock papers
- Spreadsheet tasks, database exercises, data cleaning
- Research into ethical, legal, and societal data issues
- Exploration of emerging technologies like machine learning
Students are encouraged to find real datasets and explore tools like Excel, Python, or data visualisation platforms to deepen their learning.
